Hydrogen purification with DeOxo Dryers for high-purity H₂
For over 40 years, we have been supplying advanced DeOxo Dryer systems for the purification of hydrogen produced by electrolysis.
Codes & standards
Hydrogen produced by electrolysis typically contains residual oxygen, moisture and – in the case of alkaline electrolyzers – traces of KOH. For transportation, storage and most downstream applications, hydrogen must be reliably purified.
ReiCat develops and supplies turnkey DeOxo Dryer systems for hydrogen purification. Our modular systems combine a high-performance DeOxo catalyst for oxygen removal with long-life molecular sieves for hydrogen drying using Temperature Swing Adsorption (TSA). This enables hydrogen purities ranging from grade 5.0 (>99.999%) up to grade 6.0 (99.9999%), making the gas suitable for applications such as e-methanol production, ammonia synthesis, fuel cells, semiconductor manufacturing, hydrogen storage, and transportation via pipelines or trailers.
With more than 40 years of experience in the purification of electrolytic hydrogen, over 60 hydrogen treatment systems installed worldwide, and participation in several flagship hydrogen projects, ReiCat has extensive expertise in industrial-scale hydrogen purification. Recent projects include hydrogen purification systems for European Energy’s 50 MW e-methanol facility in Denmark, EWE’s 320 MW electrolyzer project in Emden, Germany, and hydrogen recycling systems for Symrise in the United States and Spain.
Our DeOxo Dryers have been specifically designed to meet the requirements of modern Power-to-X plants. They are compatible with all major electrolyzer technologies, including PEM, alkaline, SOEC and AEM electrolyzers, and can accommodate highly dynamic operating conditions with flow rates ranging from 5% to 100%.
Thanks to an energy-efficient process design, heat recovery and our proprietary Closed Loop Technology, our systems achieve exceptionally low energy consumption of only 6–10 Wh/Nm³ while reducing hydrogen losses to as little as 0%.
In addition to the purification of hydrogen from water electrolysis, ReiCat also provides solutions for hydrogen purification from chlor-alkali electrolysis, steam reforming processes, and for the polishing of hydrogen streams to higher purity grades.

We manufacture our systems as skids in collaboration with a broad network of certified and highly specialized suppliers and partners. The most crucial aspect for ReiCat: Quality control!
Quality control is continuously performed during skid manufacturing and between the individual disciplines. ReiCat always carries out both the quality control and the final leak and functional tests.
We support our customers on-site during the commissioning of our systems. This includes supervising the installation of the systems, filling the tanks, performing final mechanical work, and starting up the system.
The skid construction enables quick and safe commissioning.
Our systems stand for durability. We offer maintenance services to ensure this and supply spare parts, wear parts, and consumables.
ReiCat products are trusted and used by leading international brands such as Linde, Air Products, Covestro, European Energy, Neumann & Esser, Siemens, SECO/WARWICK, and Vacuumschmelze, among many others.
This heavily depends on the H2 purification system size and scope. For a system size of 15,000 Nm³/h, commissioning and startup typically take around 2 – 3 weeks.
Yes, outdoor installation of the H2 purification unit is possible with accompanying heating and insulation elements.
Delivery time highly depends on your specifications and our capacity at time of order.
Yes, it is possible. We generally follow EN standards. Upon request we are happy to follow other engineering standards like ASME, China Stamp, etc. We have delivered systems for every common international standard in the past.
A standard budget offer for a hydrogen purification system from ReiCat includes: engineering, all components within the skid incl. HighFlex H₂(R) and Closed Loop Technology (pressure vessels, piping, fittings, catalyst, molecular sieve), O2 & H2O analysis, design according to EN code, manufacturing.
Our standard scope of supply includes: gas purification unit, packaging, transportation (upon request), supervision of commissioning & startup service, spare parts package, custom maintenance package (upon request).
A standard ReiCat hydrogen purification system consumes approximately 10 Wh per Nm³.
A standard systems loses around 3 % of hydrogen. ReiCat Closed Loop Technology can reduce this to zero.
8 h – 24 h adsorption cycles (depending on the size of the unit), 8 h regeneration.
Our systems are flexible in terms of temperature. The standard pressure range is 1 – 40 bar(g). However, a special design allows pressures up 400 bar(g).
Yes, under the condition that there are only oxygen and moisture as impurities and that the gas can be dried up to – 60 °C and at > 20 bar, our systems can purify hydrogen to grade 99.9999 %. This requires a bigger reactor and a bigger chiller.
The main impurities of H2 from electrolysis are residual oxygen and moisture. In case of alkaline electrolysis there might also be traces of liquid alkaline. Oxygen, moisture and aerosols can be removed by standard ReiCat hydrogen purification units producing hydrogen of quality 5.0 / grade 99.999 %. Further impurities might be removed by enhanncing our standard systems.
Hydrogen used as an energy storage or transportation medium or in a production or manufacturing process requires high purity for various safety and quality reasons.
The standard established in the industrial gas sector is a purity of > 99.999 %, which corresponds to quality 5.0.
The following problems can arise due to impurities:
Various chemical and mechanical processes are combined to achieve a purity of > 99.999 % or quality 5.0. Usually, more than a single process is required to produce the desired quality.
Depending on the operating parameters, ReiCat Catalyst Technology and TSA (Temperature Swing Adsorption) dryers are typically combined with other chemical and mechanical processes.
We often use gas-gas heat exchangers, as catalytic purification requires high temperatures. The gas-gas heat exchangers reduce energy costs through heat recovery (recuperation). Our proven modular system guarantees individual, cost-effective and high-quality solutions.
Our ReiCat Closed Loop Technology can optionally be added to any system. It ensures that our H2 purification systems operate with up to 0% losses and emissions.
With our ReiCat HighFlex H2® Technology, the purification system can adeptly handle fluctuating volume flows when purifying hydrogen from Power-to-X systems. This adaptability ensures a consistent purification performance.
Based on over 40 years of experience, we guarantee maximum availability and the most efficient purification performance. In 2005, we commissioned one of the largest hydrogen purification plants in Europe to purify H2 from chlor-alkali electrolysis. It has been running reliably ever since.
Our proprietary HighFlex H2® Technology guarantees consistent 5.0 gas quality when purifying hydrogen from Power-to-X plants, even with fluctuating volume flows.
ReiCat’s proprietary Closed Loop Technology ensures that our H2 purification systems operate with up to 0% losses and emissions.
We use redundant online gas analysis equipment in our hydrogen recycling plants to ensure the desired gas quality.
At ReiCat, we understand gas drying to mean the removal of moisture from a technical gas. By gas purification, we mean the removal of unwanted impurities from a technical gas. Those unwanted impurities may include moisture. Gas drying is therefore a sub-category of gas purification.
